The Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Hon Sashi Kiran, last night officiated at the 40th Anniversary Celebrations of the Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation at the Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons complex in Brown Street, Suva.
In her address, Minister Kiran expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Federation, its pioneers making special mention of champions such as the late Joshko Wakaniyasi, and the late Mrs. Angeline Chand as well as Mr. Setareki Macanawai, Mrs. Lanieta Tuimabu, and the dedicated volunteers whose tireless efforts have led to significant achievements over the past four decades. She highlighted the Federation’s pivotal role in advocating for the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration to enhance the lives of all citizens.
“According 2017 data people with disability are more likely to live in lower wealth quantile households with 23 % living in lowest and 16% living in highest wealth quantile. More than 15% have never attended school. About 51% accessed secondary school qualification however 34% left school before finishing and only 5% attained post-secondary education. Only 3 in 10 persons living with disability are in labor force and economically active,” the Assistant Minister shared.
“The journey over the last 40 years has been marked by resilience and determination,” said Minister Kiran. “Together, we have made strides towards a more inclusive society, but our work is far from over. Let us continue to champion the rights of individuals with disabilities and ensure that their voices are heard.”
The event was attended by various stakeholders, District leaders and members, and members of the Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation. They came together to celebrate the Federation’s legacy and look forward to a future of continued progress.
