Background
Psychiatric Survivors Association of Fiji (PSA) exists and is led by people who have a mental illness. It was established in 2004 by a small group of people who had spent time in Fiji’s only inpatient facility (St Giles Hospital). PSA was registered in 2006 under the Charitable Trusts Act.
PSA currently has 350 members throughout the Fiji Islands, and has an office in Suva.
PSA aims to provide a service that delivers individual support and promotes human rights, access to protection and enhancement of these rights, through friendship, peer support, advocacy, mental health promotion, community education, campaigning and policy work.
Mission
The goal of PSA is to serve the psychiatric survivors of the Fiji Islands. It will do this through self help, advocacy, social activities, support and other projects to improves their lives
Vision
- to assert the Convention of the Rights of People with Disabilities, to ensure that Fijians who have experienced mental illness or had contact with mental health services enjoy human rights, respect, and full and effective participation and inclusion in all aspects of civil society
- to improve the lives of psychiatric survivors throughout the Fiji Islands
- to promote the voice of survivors and a model of advocacy.
